Artspace – Open Call – Drayway Art Installation (Summer 2018)
Categories: Artspace News
Artspace is seeking visual artists to transform a drayway (often referred to as the tunnel) over the course of four Friday evenings. The aim is to have a semi-permanent art piece inhabit the drayway, without affecting its function.
The current Drayway naturally attracts people, as it is a unique feature of the neighbourhood. Since Artspace is a creative hub, we are seeking to utilize the drayway as a method of showcasing of the artistic nature of the building and the neighbourhood. We are offering up a chance for a visual artist to transform this unique space, either in its entirety, or sections of it. This includes the walls, the roof and/or the ground. This type of transformation requires ingenuity and creativity, and thus we want the public to witness the work in progress. As such, we will be creating art lounges over four evenings during the summer, where the public can come have a drink and witness the artist at work. The selected artist will be expected to create/install their art during these art lounges. Thus, the piece will evolve over the course of the summer, leading to a completed reveal in September, at which point the piece will continue to inhabit the tunnel as long as it is presentable.
Artspace is committing to artist fees of $3,400 that are paid out in four installments of $850. Each payment coincides with the four art lounge nights. Upon request, the artist may have access to the drayway at additional times, for installation/creation. Artspace has set aside a budget to cover some of the costs associated to materials and equipment necessary for the installation of the art piece. A maximum of $4,000 for all four nights (materials and equipment to install) maybe requested by the artist, and should be identified in their proposal, including a detailed budget. Artists are not expected to use all of these available funds, and special consideration will be given to submissions that judiciously utilize this budget allocation.
Interested artists are asked to submit a project proposal to Artspace by midnight Friday May 11th 2018. E-mail submissions are encouraged, and can be sent to Eric@art-space.ca One may also drop off or mail a submission to:

Artspace encourages creative submissions. However, consideration will be given to the fact that the art cannot compromise the use of the space. In other words, the art installation (once complete) cannot impact the fact that the drayway is an active passageway.
Please note that the Art Lounges are held in a semi-closed space with a fair number of attendees. The artist is asked to take this into consideration as they submit their project plan to Artspace. For example, it would be ill-advised to do spray painting during the art lounges.
Drayway Art Lounge runs from 4pm to 10pm on the following dates:
Friday June 1st
Friday June 29th
Friday July 27th a
Friday September 7th
Artists will be informed of the selection decision by May 18th 2018.
